The
Han Horse is located in Manhattan at: Hours: Mon.-Fri.: 10-6 pm; Sat.: 12-5 pm. Our gallery specializes in 18th and 19th century vernacular Chinese furniture and accessories. What is vernacular? It means literally "of the people"... furniture from Chinese people's homes, not intended for export. Many of the Chinese pieces you see in this country were created solely for export to Europe and America. The Chinese never used it nor intended to use it. But
in the early 1990s, westerners discovered an overlooked genre of Chinese
design, furniture from the late Qing (Ching) Dynasty. Crafted largely
for a booming merchant class, it reflected not only the elegance, beauty,
and simple proportions of traditional Chinese design, but an added element
of imagination, inspired by China’s new exposure to other cultures.
The Han Horse was originally founded in 1997 as Chinese Country Antiques, and the company did most of its business at antiques show. The owners, Lynde and Andrea McCormick, are among the leading authorities on 18th and 19th century Chinese furniture, and in October 2003 opened their new gallery in Manhattan, The Han Horse. If you want to learn
